Brilliant Biomes

This week, Rievaulx completed their geography unit on biomes. Each week, we have looked at different biomes, their location, their climate and the animals and plants that live within them. After completing information pages, comparison tables, explorer guides and diary entries throughout the unit, we finished it off with dioramas. The instructions for each diorama had a list of things that must be included and directions as to what must be included in a set of information cards.
The class brought together everything they had learnt brilliantly and created a memorable final piece 🌏

Well Done Year 6!

Well done to our wonderful Year 6 pupils on completing SATs week and making it look easy! This fantastic bunch, fuelled by a special breakfast each morning, tackled each test with confidence and determination. All of Year 6 have attended SATs booster sessions and had a mindset that allowed them to feel prepared for each assessment. Whatever the results, we know they gave their all and therefore, they are winners in our eyes.

We have had the best time at PGL Newby Wiske for our residential.  We were busy from the second we arrived and packed so much in - laser quest, giant swing, vertical climb, archery, raft building and lots more.  Most importantly, we have worked as a team, enjoyed each other's company, challenged ourselves and laughed...lots!  We are filled with wonderful memories and pride in everything we achieved.

Forest Schools - Summer Term 1

Rievaulx have had an excellent Forest School day this week.  The sun shone brightly as we made clay candle holders, filled with wax and wicks to make candles we could take home and light, weaved star dream catchers and cooked and ate delicious cinnamon toast.

DT - Playgrounds

Today, Rievaulx completed their DT unit - Playgrounds.  In this unit, we had to begin by identifying the criteria that was needed to make a good playground.  We thought about lot of elements, such as safety, enjoyment and inclusion, before creating a design that matched our criteria.  Following that, we were tasked with creating a model to bring our designs to life.  Teamwork, patience and a lot of technical skills were needed, but we rose to the challenge with amazing results.

Yorkshire Rotters

Today we welcomed a team from The Yorkshire Rotters, an organisation which works with the community to help reduce climate change and encourage sustainable living.  We learnt all about the role worms can play in composting waste foods and built our own wormeries.  We also looked at using up fruits in the home by making smoothies on the rotter's smoothie bike, where the faster you pedal, the quick the blender mixes your drink!

Separating Materials

Today in Rievaulx Class we dealt with a supermarket disaster!  The delivery truck found on arrival that the packaging of the items being delivered had been damaged and many of the products had mixed together.  We were tasked with separating the materials before anyone noticed.  The class were given a set of equipment that they could use, including sieves, paper towels, magnets and spare cups.  It was clear that some separating techniques were not suitable for some mixtures, so some investigation needed to be done to complete the job well.

Forest Schools - Spring Term 1

Rievaulx Class had a wet, muddy and enjoyable forest school session this week.  Linking in to our Viking topic, the class had a chance to make oat, rye and spelt bread over the fire, built Viking settlements and spent time in the craft area whittling wooden objects to take home.

Maths Through Stories

Rievaulx Class had a fantastic afternoon looking at Maths through the story book, The Lion's Share.  The book tells the story of Ant, who attends Lion's party. The animals at the party all attempt to share the cake by taking half and passing it on. We followed the story, looking at the fraction each animal got as each slice quickly got smaller and smaller!
