At our school, we use Read Write Inc. Phonics, a structured and proven programme that helps children learn to read, write and spell with confidence.

The programme teaches children to recognise the sounds that letters make (phonics) and blend these sounds together to read words. Children also learn to break words into individual sounds, helping them to become accurate and confident writers.

How Does It Work?

Children are regularly assessed and taught in small groups according to their current reading ability. This allows teaching to be closely matched to each child's needs and ensures that every child is both supported and challenged appropriately.

Groups are reviewed and updated at the end of each half term so that children can continue to make strong progress at a pace that is right for them.

Alongside Read Write Inc. lessons, children continue to develop their writing, language and storytelling skills through learning with their class teacher.

Reading

Using Read Write Inc., children quickly develop the skills needed to become fluent readers. As their confidence grows, they can focus more on understanding and enjoying what they read.

Children will:

• Learn the 44 sounds in the English language and the letters or groups of letters that represent them.
• Learn to blend sounds together to read words accurately.
• Read engaging stories that are carefully matched to their phonics knowledge.
• Build their understanding of texts through discussion and comprehension activities.

Writing

Read Write Inc. also supports children in becoming confident and successful writers. By developing strong phonics knowledge, children learn to spell accurately and write with increasing independence.

Children will:

• Learn to write the letters and letter groups (graphemes) that represent the 44 sounds.
• Use their phonics knowledge to spell words by segmenting them into sounds.
• Write simple sentences before progressing to more detailed and complex writing.
