Yorkshire Rotters
Today we welcomed a team from The Yorkshire Rotters, an organisation which works with the community to help reduce climate change and encourage sustainable living. We learnt all about the role worms can play in composting waste foods and built our own wormeries. We also looked at using up fruits in the home by making smoothies on the rotter's smoothie bike, where the faster you pedal, the quick the blender mixes your drink!
Separating Materials
Today in Rievaulx Class we dealt with a supermarket disaster! The delivery truck found on arrival that the packaging of the items being delivered had been damaged and many of the products had mixed together. We were tasked with separating the materials before anyone noticed. The class were given a set of equipment that they could use, including sieves, paper towels, magnets and spare cups. It was clear that some separating techniques were not suitable for some mixtures, so some investigation needed to be done to complete the job well.
Rievaulx Class had a wet, muddy and enjoyable forest school session this week. Linking in to our Viking topic, the class had a chance to make oat, rye and spelt bread over the fire, built Viking settlements and spent time in the craft area whittling wooden objects to take home.
Rievaulx Class had a fantastic afternoon looking at Maths through the story book, The Lion's Share. The book tells the story of Ant, who attends Lion's party. The animals at the party all attempt to share the cake by taking half and passing it on. We followed the story, looking at the fraction each animal got as each slice quickly got smaller and smaller!
