ELG Numbers: Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
This week’s focus will be all around subtracting.
Starter: focus on positional language. I have attached a few songs we enjoy singing but a quick game of describe where this object is. Example, place a lego block in different places around the room encourage your child to use language such as on top of the chair, in between the cutlery, beside the candle.
Main Activity: Subtraction. Starting off this morning with an amount of objects between 10 and twenty. Start by counting? how many you have. Then take away one, how many do you have now? Challenge by starting to take two away or three. Can they do it for you too? It beginning for explain to the children that when we subtract we are taking away or getting rid of some to get a new amount. It is emphasising that the amount is getting smaller and not bigger.
Also feel free to sing songs such as 10 in the bed and 5 cheeky monkeys, any song in which one object goes away to reinforce that taking away and the numbers getting smaller.
Remember any work needs to go into their green work home books and on tapestry please.
