ELG Numbers: Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

This week’s focus will be all around subtraction.

Starter: ask your child if they can sing you the days of the week song and months of the year song? Make sure they get them all in the right order.

Main Activity: Ask children to show a number of fingers, then to take (initially 1) some away, ask how many are left. Explain we are going to use the whiteboards/green work books to work out some take away problems. Give the children a number and a simple shape to draw, e.g. 6 circles. Tell them to take away 2 by rubbing/crossing them out. Ask how many are left. Reinforce vocabulary “So 6 take away 2 makes 4”. Repeat with other vocabulary (minus, subtract, leaves, is). If your child is struggling get objects from around the room to help.
