ELG Numbers: Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
This week’s focus will be all around doubling and halving.
Starter: Can your child count in 2’s? Here are the two videos we enjoy in class.
Main Activity: Today I would like you to focus on vocabulary surrounding twice. This word can be used interchangeably with double. So today while cooking, playing or eating can you ask your child if they could get/eat twice as many/much? What do they do? Can they explain why they got as many as they did?
Explain that twice as much would mean the same as to double it. Now see if your child can get twice as much. Instead of asking them to double an amount of objects see if they can get twice as much continue until they are doing it confidently.
There is also a Numberjacks the children can watch which begins to look at halving. The children love watching these while we eat our snack! We’ve even got a special brain gain dance, see if they can do it for you.
Please don't forget there are lots of extra activities for your child on mathletics. I am keeping my eye on who is using it.
